The first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.  It is to constitute a national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country.  The first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City by the Central Labor Union. In 1884, the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that date. On June 28, 1894 Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday.

Many people look at Labor Day as the official ending of summer because it is the last holiday of the Summer season.  In the early years of Labor Day, it was celebrated with parades and picnics, but now it is mostly a time families and friends get together for picnics and barbecues.  Celebrate this Labor Day with Bar-B-Cutie and pick up a Picnic Pack to take to your get-together.  Have a safe and happy Labor Day!!!!!!

Happy National Sponge Cake Day

Today is National Sponge Cake Day - since we don't have sponge cake at Bar-B-Cutie as one of our dessert choices I thought I would share a recipe with you instead.  If you don't bake and want to participate in the celebration a Twinkie can actually qualify.  So come by and have some great BBQ and then for dessert -enjoy some sponge cake –

Sponge Cake Recipe

1 Cups sifted cake flour
1/3 Cup unsweetened cocoa powder
½ tsp. Baking powder
1 ½ Cup granulated sugar, divided
6 large eggs, separated
½ tsp. Salt
½ tsp. Cream of tartar
¼ Cup water
1 ½ tsp. Vanilla extract.

Heat oven to 375°.

Sift together flour, cocoa, baking powder and 1 cup sugar.  In mixing bowl beat the egg whites with salt and cream of tartar until stiff but not dry.  Gradually add remaining ½ Cups of sugar, beat until stiff.  Whisk together the egg yolks, water and vanilla and add to dry mixture and beat until blended.  Fold the egg yolk mixture into the stiff egg white mixture.  Spoon into an un-greased 10 inch tube cake pan and bake 35 minutes.  Cool in pan.  Remove from pan and top with glaze of your choice or dust with powdered sugar.

HAPPY SPONGE CAKE DAY!!!!!

Today is Roller Coaster Day.  The roller coaster was patented on this day in 1898.  Since then we have enjoyed the ups and downs, twists and turns, and sheer excitement that roller coasters bring.  The first roller coaster in America opened in 1884 at Coney Island New York.  It traveled at 6 miles per hour and cost a nickel to ride.

Times have changed – today’s fastest roller coaster travels at speeds of 150 miles per hour and unfortunately, cost more than a nickel to ride.  But the thrill seekers among us love the challenge of the roller coaster.  As summer winds down- I hope you have had the chance to visit your favorite roller coaster this year and get that thrill!!

Come in to Bar-B-Cutie and add some thrill to your sandwich with our Tennessee Fire Sauce!!!!!
