Happy Memorial Day

Memorial Day or decoration day is May 30^th.  It is always observed the last Monday in May in memory of those who died while serving the United States in war.  The graves of war heroes are decorated with flowers.  It was first observed in 1866.  Some call Memorial Day the official kick off of the Summer season even though Summer doesn’t really begin until June.  Please remember those who have given their lives for your freedom.

What's Been Happening?

So there has been a lot of things going on at Bar-B-Cutie.  First, Happy Anniversary to the Donelson Pike location in Nashville, Tennessee!!  18 years of serving up the World's Best Barbecue to the people of Nashville.  Thank 'Que Nashville for 18 great years - we look forward to many more.

Second, welcome to our brand new location in McAllen, Texas.  This new location opened to rave reviews at the end of April.  Seems the people in McAllen are loving the Cutie and we are loving the people of McAllen!!

THE BAR-B-CUTIE STORY

In 1948, Eddie & Mildred McFarland ran a Pie Wagon known as Tasty-Eat-Shop in downtown Nashville on 9^th Avenue. In those days, a Pie Wagon only accommodated about 20 patrons and had only counter service. Mr. & Mrs. McFarland had a strong following and were successful because they were known for their southern style home cooking. Everything was made from scratch.  In 1958, Mr. McFarland got word that the Bar-B-Cutie on Murfreesboro Road was for sale. He was very familiar with Bar-b-cutie and was aware that it started in 1950, serving the very best Hickory Smoked Barbecue in town. So he purchased Bar-B-Cutie. At that time, Bar-B- Cutie was predominantly a Car Hop business and had only four inside, dining tables.  Mr. McFarland expanded the existing “short order menu” by adding his fresh “made from scratch” southern vegetables.

Business quickly grew, and he soon had to build on to the inside dining area to accommodate more guests. The McFarland’s took great pride in Bar-B-Cutie and worked very hard to make sure that their food and service were the best in town. Bar-B-Cutie became a local hang-out. People all over Nashville enjoyed taking part in the “Bar-B-Cutie experience”; the great southern food, the Cutie Car Hops dressed in short, red skirts and white tops, and the unique family atmosphere that made one always feel welcome. In 1972, Eddie and Mildred McFarland moved the Bar-B-Cutie to Nolensville Road in South Nashville to a new building that would seat in excess of 300 people.

In 1978, Eddie & Mildred McFarland retired, and their son, Ronnie, opened the first Bar-B-Cutie Drive-thru window on the same parking lot as the Bar-B-Cutie Restaurant.  As time changed and people began getting busier, the Drive-Thru at Bar-B-Cutie became more and more popular… so popular that people would come and eat sitting on crates in the back room of the restaurant.  The larger restaurant was eventually sold in favor of the Drive-Thru.  A dining Room addition to the Drive-Thru was soon built.  Another Bar-B-Cutie location was opened on Donelson Pike in 1993.

In 2004, Bar-B-Cutie Franchise Systems was formed by Brett McFarland (Ronnie’s son) & Ronnie McFarland, and as of 2011, there are 18 Bar-B-Cutie Restaurant locations in the United States and Europe.

Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is May 8^th.  We have been celebrating our mom’s on the 2^nd Sunday in May officially since 1914 when Congress and the President recognized it as an official holiday. However, it was first observed in 1908.  Our moms do so much for us, so don’t forget to treat her on her special day.  Make her job a little easier on Mother’s day and stop by Bar-B-Cutie and pick up a Family Pack to take home so she doesn’t have to do the cooking.

Have You Ever Wondered?

Have you ever wondered why we have Easter bunnies and eggs?  Easter was celebrated by ancient Saxons as a pagan festival for the return of spring where they commemorated the goddess of offspring Eastre.  When missionaries came they attempted to convert them to Christianity by combining this festival with the observance of the resurrection of Christ.  Eventually the name was changed from Eastre to Easter.

Prior to AD 325 it was celebrated on different days of the week but then Emperor Constantine issued the Easter Rule where is would be the 1^st Sunday after the 1^st full moon after Vernal Equinox or basically between March 22 and April 25^th.

The Bunny was the earthly symbol of the goddess Eastre, so that is why we have the Easter Bunny.  The egg predates the Christian holiday. Eggs were the symbol of birth and they were exchanged and often wrapped in gold leaf, or if you were a peasant, colored by boiling them in leaves or petals of flowers – the Easter Egg!!
